What causes trouble when discussing a prenuptial agreement?

You have a lot to think about as your wedding day closes in. Even though you want to enjoy the here and now, you must also think about the future.

This means many things, such as considering the pros and cons of a prenuptial agreement. Many people shy away from this legal document, as they don't want to rock the boat.

While you may have some concerns about asking your soon-to-be spouse for a prenuptial agreement, this shouldn't stop you from doing so.

Here are three things that typically cause trouble when discussing a prenuptial agreement:

  • Issuing demands: If you tell your partner to sign a prenuptial agreement, as opposed to having an open discussion, it's going to lead to trouble more times than not.
  • Hiding your true feelings: You should be honest about why you want a prenuptial agreement. This is in contrast to hiding your true feelings, all in hopes of protecting the other person and/or avoiding an argument.
  • Cramming everything into one discussion: It can take several conversations to work through the details of creating a prenuptial agreement. Don't assume you have to hash everything out in one short discussion. This isn't likely to work in your favor.

You don't ask for a prenuptial agreement with the idea of causing trouble. Unfortunately, this could happen if you don't take the right approach.

If you're ready to ask for a prenuptial agreement, prepare for the conversation and anything that could come your way. When you know what you want to say and how to proceed, it's much easier to stay the course.
